Liberty Cap 1793 Large Cent Brings Record $632,500

by Greg Reynolds for CoinLink

Husak 1793 1C Liberty Cap. AU55 PCGS. S-13 Walter Husak’s collection of early large cents, 1793-1814, sold for an unbelievable $10.7 million on Friday, Feb. 15, at the official Heritage auction of the Long Beach (CA) Coin, Stamp & Collectible Expo. (For an introduction to the collection, see my preview article on CoinLink.) A 1793 Liberty Cap large cent, and a 1794 Liberty Cap cent of the famous variety with the Starred Reverse, each sold for $632,500, an auction record for a one cent piece and for a copper numismatic item of any kind.

This Husak 1793 Liberty Cap cent is graded AU-55 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Further, there is agreement among many large cent experts that this coin is indeed of Almost Uncirculated grade. It is characterized by a very small amount of even, honest wear. Before analyzing the $632,500 price for this Liberty Cap cent, it makes sense to review auction records for copper items, particularly large cents.

A copper numismatic item is at least 90% copper and is a coin, another monetary instrument (including certain tokens), a pattern of a coin, or a medal. From May 1996 until January 2008, the auction record for a copper numismatic item stood at $506,000, which is the price realized for the Eliasberg 1796 ‘No Pole’ Half Cent that Bowers & Merena auctioned in New York.

Strawberry Leaf 1793 large Cent At the same 1996 Eliasberg sale, an auction record for a regular issue large cent was set when a 1793 Liberty Cap cent sold for $319,000. The large cent record was broken when ANR auctioned the Oliver Jung 1793 Chain Cent, PCGS certified ‘MS-65 Brown’ for $391,000 in July 2004, in New York City. This record lasted for only a few months. In Nov. 2004, ANR auctioned a NGC certified Fine-12 Strawberry Leaf 1793 Wreath Cent for $414,000. Soon afterwards, in Jan. 2005, a new record was set when ANR again auctioned a a different PCGS certified ‘MS-65 BN’ Chain Cent, coin, for $431,250. Steve Contursi was the buyer.

On Jan. 10, 2008, in Orlando, a 1792 ‘Fusible Alloy’ cent pattern was auctioned on Heritage’s Platinum Night for $603,750. As I explained in my article about it, this result clearly was an auction record for a one cent piece, though a 1792 ‘Fusible Alloy’ pattern is not a coin. Moreover, this ‘Fusible Alloy’ cent may consist of the experimental silver and copper “fusible alloy,” or of some other alloy. It thus may not be correct to categorize it as a copper numismatic item. Dallas, TX: A third selection of Early Seated Proof Sets from Phil Kaufman’s superlative multi-million dollar collection (1839-1858) is being auctioned by Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries in their Platinum Night Auction at the April 16-19 CSNS convention in Chicago.Kaufman's early Seated Proofs in CSNS Heritage Auction

“Part One of the Kaufman Collection, realizing $1,712,600, was sold at the August 2007 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee,” noted Heritage President Greg Rohan, “followed by Part Two at the January 2008 FUN auction, which realized $2,590,000. Part Three, to be offered at CSNS, comprises the Seated Liberty proof coins of 1839, 1842, 1846, 1849, and 1855. The fourth and final selection will be auctioned at the Baltimore 2008 ANA World’s Fair of Money.”

“Mr. Kaufman is an extraordinary collector,” continued Rohan. “We started selling important selections from his collections in 2002, and have successfully concluded more than a half dozen separate consignments. We are appreciative of his continued trust in Heritage.”

California dealer Barry Stuppler, who helped Mr. Kaufman assemble these wonderful coins, noted, “In the recent history of numismatics there hasn’t been any other collection of early proof seated Liberty coins of this quality, and that is amply demonstrated by the incredible prices that Phil is receiving for these wonderful coins.”

After a lifetime dedicated to coin collecting, Mr. Kaufman started focusing on the Seated Liberty proofs by the late 1980s. His goal was to obtain a leading example of each denomination and date, constantly upgrading as better coins appeared in the marketplace. His philosophy was to buy the best quality he could find and afford for the grade, and seeking coins pedigreed to important collections (including Eliasberg, Pittman, Norweb, Starr, and Stack).

The Roswell collection was formed by a prominent Roswell business man with the assistance of John B. Hamrick. This collection contains 33 of the coins as listed in Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth’s book “America’s Greatest 100 Coins.” In addition this collection contains many of America’s other great rarities which are seldom offered for sale. Many of these coins are in top condition and amongst the finest known.

There are too many coins to list. Hamrick states, “This is one of the most important collections of major U.S. rarities accumulated by a single individual in the past 20 years. Furthermore, I feel that the Roswell Collection will be the sale of the year.”

Hamrick notes that many of the coins are to be offered for sale at the Central States Numismatic Convention to the held in Chicago in mid April. The coins will be on display and sold at Booth #900. An armed guard will be present at all times. There is the possibility that the collection will be sold intact prior to the Convention.
